We kicked off our day with a golden sunrise inside Gir National Park, staying in the government forest cottages. The stay is around 3000 rupees a night without food and taxes, and trust me the peace you get there is priceless. Step outside your cottage and all you hear is birds, rustling leaves, fresh forest air and a calm you cannot find anywhere else.
Soon it was time for our safari. At the boarding point you register, get your permit, book the full vehicle and select a guide. You can choose between a regular guide or a more experienced one who costs only a little extra but makes a massive difference once you are inside the forest. Plastic is not allowed so even the water bottle you buy is returnable. The system is strict and the forest is protected with serious discipline.
After the entry checks and document verification at the gate, the adventure began. At first we spotted langurs and deer scattered along the trail. Then we saw a line of jeeps quietly parked. Our guide signaled us to stop. He whispered that there was a leopard hidden behind the grass. For a few minutes it was like a real life hide and seek. Then suddenly the leopard moved. Silent, smooth, and unbelievably graceful. Leopards are shy and blend perfectly with the forest tones, but our guide knew exactly where to look. That was our first big sighting.
The excitement doubled within minutes. Not even ten minutes ahead, our guide spotted a mating pair of Asiatic lions sitting right next to the track. Calm, powerful and completely unbothered by us. Watching them so close, in their own world, with the sun soaking their manes was one of the most surreal moments of our trip. A true Full Paisa Vasool moment. This is exactly what you dream of before you enter Gir.
As we continued, we passed snakes, birds and then reached Kamleshwar Dam, the main water body inside the core forest. Crocodiles were resting by the banks and the view was picture perfect. By now our three hour safari window was coming to an end, and we were already thrilled with the leopard and lion pair.
But Gir saved its best surprise for the last. Out of nowhere our guide signaled again. A lion drinking water near a stream, its tail visible first, then the full majestic frame. Quiet, powerful and royal. That sight alone sealed the trip.
If you ever get a chance, come to Gir at least once in your life. This is not just a safari. It is a close encounter with raw nature and the true king of the wild.
