Shortly before 8 am on Friday, January 12th, 2024, emergency crews from Lincoln Fire Rescue, Niagara EMS, the OPP, Niagara Regional Police, and the Ministry of Transportation responded to the area of the South Service Road and the Tufford Road overpass in Beamsville for reports of a serious collision involving a fuel tanker.
Police report the driver of a black Mercedes two-door sedan cut off an SUV on the QEW Niagara-bound, which then collided with a fuel tanker; sending the fuel tanker off the highway and crashing through the fence of the S Service Road where it ultimately rolled over into the ditch.
Approximately 15,000 litres of fuel spilled from the tanker, leading to first responders evacuating a 300 metre radius surrounding the incident due to an explosive hazard.
The driver of the fuel truck was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries (a head injury), while the driver of the white SUV was not injured.
The driver of the third vehicle fled the scene. Initial reports were that the fuel tanker had collided with multiple vehicles, however that information was incorrect as the ‘other vehicles’ were simply witnesses/people stopping to help.
The clean-up from this collision took all day Friday and continued through Saturday, January 13th; resulting in the QEW being closed and significant traffic issues for travellers.
