Jizu Mountain, located in the northwestern corner of Binchuan County, Dali, Yunnan Province, takes its name from its shape, which resembles a chicken’s foot. The main peak, Tianzhu Peak, rises to an elevation of 3,240 meters.
According to legend, Shakyamuni Buddha entrusted his robe and alms bowl to Kashyapa, who entered deep meditation here, awaiting the coming of Maitreya to pass on the Dharma and enlighten future generations. For this reason, Jizu Mountain is revered as the “Bodhimanda of Kashyapa.”
Buddhism flourished here from the Tang dynasty onward, reaching its peak during the Ming and Qing periods. The eminent monk Master Xuyun later restored the Zhusheng Temple, reviving the brilliance of Chan (Zen) Buddhism.
Known as the “Sacred Mountain of Buddhism” and the “Heavenly Realm of the Buddha,” Jizu Mountain is home to 36 temples and 72 monasteries, where incense has never ceased to burn.
Climb to the Golden Summit to gaze upon the misty Erhai Lake, pay homage at Huashou Gate, and reflect on the timeless truth of “the transmission of the robe and bowl, and the eternal light of wisdom.”
