The 38 Minute War in Zanzibar 1896:
The shortest war in history took place on August 27, 1896, between the British Empire and the Sultanate of Zanzibar. The conflict was triggered when Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini, who had been cooperative with the British, died unexpectedly and was succeeded by Sultan Khalid bin Barghash without British approval. The British, favoring another candidate who aligned with their interests, issued an ultimatum demanding Khalid step down. When he refused, British warships in the harbor opened fire.
The bombardment began at 09:02 AM and lasted for just 38 to 45 minutes, ending around 09:40 AM, making it the shortest recorded war in history. The Sultan's palace was heavily damaged, and around 500 Zanzibari defenders were killed or wounded, while the British suffered only one sailor injured. Sultan Khalid fled to the German consulate and later escaped to German East Africa. The British quickly installed their preferred Sultan, effectively ending the conflict and asserting greater control over the island.
