Backstory for She Was Just the Teacher
I had an art teacher at Needham Junior High School in Lodi, California. I don’t even remember her name, to be honest. She was pretty frail, the type who was afraid of her own shadow. I remember that we made her cry in class, but I can’t remember why…probably out of frustration, since we were middle schoolers. In spite of all of that, I still remember many of the rules of art she taught us and still use them to this day, rules like perspective, horizon lines, and vanishing points, among others. It would be good to go back in time and let her know that she had a positive impact and that I remember her lessons, even if at times we may have been very frustrating to her. I saw her merely as the “art teacher,” and not as a real person with real feelings and a desire to make a difference. It would be good to let her know that she is now appreciated, that I learned rules of art that I still use today, and that I now see her as more than “just the teacher”. This is another song in the set of songs inspired by David Brooks’ book, “How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen”. It is written to the music of ABBA’s “I Have a Dream,” written by Andersson and Ulvaeus and covered by Phil McGarrick on guitar. This song is dedicated to my nameless art teacher, and to others like her who were unrecognized and unappreciated gifts.
