Computer Space [ 1971 ] [ Arcade ]

Computer Space from Atari is one of the first Arcade video games ever made, and it's also considered to be the first video game with sound. On this Quick Look video I show you 3 rounds of Computer Space gameplay with the help of a simulator.

Created by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney (founders of Syzygy Engineering which was renamed as Atari mere months later), and released by Nutting Associates around November of 1971, the Computer Space game is known as the first Arcade cabinet to be commercially distributed.

Inspired by SpaceWar but with an AI-controlled opponent, Computer Space puts you in control of a decent-size Rocket ship, flying in empty space, with the single objective of taking down as many Saucers as possible within the time limit.

The Rocket ship needs momentum before it picks up some speed, so controlling it is as much of a challenge as hitting your opponent. Also, you can only have one projectile on screen at a time, but you can manually manoeuvre the projectile which is essential if you really want to hit anything.

Unfortunately, this Computer Space simulation does not include Hyperspace mode, which is basically a time extension where the on-screen colours reverse (the blackness of space becomes white, while the white Rocket, Saucers and background stars all become black). However, other than that, this Quick Look video shows everything you can do in the original game.
