All Dr. Dalbir Sehmby wants to be, first and foremost, is a human being. In this riveting and comedic talk, Dalbir shares how stress and fear entrench hate, but also how we can escape this cycle to approach balanced perception. Born and raised in Canada's north, Dr. Dalbir S. Sehmby is the first in his family to enter university and is inspired by his parents' work ethic, value for education, and commitment to human rights. Dalbir is a sessional instructor at University of Alberta's Campus Saint-Jean and Grant MacEwan University, where he teaches English. As co-founder of Campus Saint-Jean's Stresstival (a variety of initiatives to help integrate mindfulness, flow, and stress management into the curriculum) Dr. Sehmby seeks a paradigm shift in university education. For his teaching, Dr. Sehmby has received the University of Alberta SALUTE award and the Last Lecture honour. The first volunteer instructor of Humanites 101-Edmonton, Dalbir continues his volunteer initiatives to empower students by running a Creativity group and a Bilingual Educational Debate group at Campus Saint-Jean. With a PhD in Film/Media Studies and Comparative Literature, Dalbir has fostered research interests in popular culture, storytelling, and identity studies, while his teaching has led Dalbir to nurture interests in evidence-based teaching, cognitive psychology, and brain-based learning. In terms of his own learning, Dr. Dalbir Sehmby enjoys being continually schooled by his wonderful wife and three great children. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
