In our increasingly digitised world, much of our daily lives, relationships, and memories play out on screens and devices. This has a profound effect on how we relate to our environment and to one another. At the same time, trends in architecture have fostered international styles characterised by clean lines, steel, glass, and a lack of ornament, detail, or meaning.
In this talk, Craig will describe how the confluence of rising digitisation and characterless buildings affects our connection to our surroundings and impacts our mental health. He will advocate for a new era of ‘hyper-physical’ buildings that integrate character, nature, and meaning into our cities, countering the dominance of the digital sphere and the anonymous, soulless structures that surround us. Craig leads and oversees Heatherwick Studio’s Asia studio. In this role, he helps direct projects and facilitate team members on the ground in the realisation of projects in Asia Pacific.
Previously, Craig led the design of the 120,000sqm new headquarters office for Google in King’s Cross, Pacific Place in Hong Kong and the 1000 Trees mixed-use development in Shanghai. He is currently supporting the design leadership of Changi Airport Terminal 5 in Singapore (in collaboration with KPF) and a Museum Busan, South Korea.Through exploring innovative form, integration of nature and imbuing meaning through making, Craig leads creative collaborations across a diverse range of typologies to bring new perspectives and solutions to urban life in the 21st Century. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
