The flagship of the Latécoère industry, the Latécoère 631 is a 75-ton transatlantic civil seaplane, the largest ever built at the time.
A dozen 631s were delivered to Air France from 1945 onwards and put into service in 1947. As the world's largest aircraft in service, the Latécoère 631 symbolises French aviation's post-war renaissance. For one year, the Latécoère 631 flew the longest non-stop commercial route of its day, from Port-Étienne to Fort-de-France, a non-stop distance of 4,700 km, breaking several world records. This airliner made the Biscarrosse (France) - Fort-de-France (West Indies) route between July 1947 and August 1948, carrying 2,000 passengers on two monthly rotations.
For its generation, the Latécoère 631 was an innovative aircraft. The French aircraft bridged the gap between the plane of the pioneers and those that made air travel the safest means of travel in the world.
Remarkable features of the Latécoère 631: 50 passengers, 5-6 tons of freight, 57.43 m wingspan, 75 tons total weight, 6 Wright R-2600-C14 14-cylinder star engines with 1,950 hp each, 417 km/h top speed and 6,800 km range.
