The Jaguar/Land Rover AJ-8 V8 is family of engines (AJ-26/27/29/33), with the very popular AJ-V8 Gen 3 aka LR-V8 Petrol engine being the most popular. We see it in a lot of Range Rovers and Range Rover Sport models, and many Jaguar V8s. It’s a very sturdy and reliable engine, with no major engineering defects. It has two areas, though, that can kill it: the timing chains and the cooling system. In this video we show a timing chain job in a 2012 Ranger Rover Sport normally aspirated, but the Supercharged job is very similar.

The consensus is that the timing chain failure is largely due to the moronic 10K mile oil change intervals recommended by the manufacturer. After 5K miles, your engine oil has lost most lubricant properties, and fails to protect high-friction parts like the timing chain. After only 7 or 8 oil changes in 70 or 80K miles (best case scenario) the chains are stretched.

This smart customer paid attention to his car, and the dealer provided a quote that was extravagant. He toured our Service Center and grilled us on our expertise with this job, because you want to know who is going to the doing a multi-thousand job in your Rover! We are always excited to answer any questions, and were glad to earn his trust.

The job was completed in 4 days, with all original Land Rover parts. The difference in performance and engine note was massive, as you can see in the video.
