How to calculate volume
The formula for calculating volume depends on the shape of the object you want to calculate the volume of, and in this video we are going to cover a cube, or square box, a rectangle, a cylinder, a cone and a sphere or ball.

Starting with a cube, or a square box. The formula for calculating the volume of a cube is length times width times depth. So, the volume equals l times w times d. From this diagram we have 7 centemeters times 7cm times 7cm, which is 343cm cubed, because there are 3cm in the multiplication. As you can see, because this shape is a cube, all of the measurements are the same, so an alternative way to write the formula would be a cubed, and 7cm cubed, or 7 raised to the 3 is 343cm cubed.

The formula for calculating the volume of a rectangle is basically the same as for a cube shape, length times width times depth, but we can’t use the a cubed shortcut because not all of the measurements of a rectangle are the same. So, in this example, we have l times w times d, 8cm times 4cm times 5cm, which is 160cm3.

The formula for calculating the volume of a cylinder is pie times r squared times h. Pie is a constant that is approximately equal to 3.14, r is the radius of the circular cross section of the cylinder and h is the height of the cylinder. From the diagram we have 3.14 times 4cm squared times 14 cm. And calculating out we get 703.36cm3, again, there are 3cm in the multiplication. Sometimes this formula is written as pie times d squared times h divided by 4, where d is the diameter of the cylinder and the diameter is 2 times the radius. Plugging and calculating out we get 703.36cm3, same as before.

The formula for calculating the volume of a cone is 1 over 3 times pie, times r squared times h. Pie is a constant that is approximately equal to 3.14, r is the radius of the circle at the bottom of the cone and h is the height of the cone. From the diagram we have 1 over 3 times, 3.14 times 7cm squared times 17 cm. And calculating out and rounding off, we get 871.87cm3.

The formula for calculating the volume of a sphere is 4 times pie, times r to the 3rd divided by 3. Again, pie is a constant that is approximately equal to 3.14, and r is the radius of the sphere. From the diagram we have 1 over 3 times, 3.14 times 7cm squared times 17 cm. And calculating out we get 904.32cm3.
