The imposing Aswan Dam with Lake Nasser | Nile River Cruise, Egypt 2023

Egypt is known as the land of pyramids and pharaohs. But beyond that, you can marvel at several other buildings here; one of the most imposing is certainly the Aswan Dam. This is located about 13 kilometers from the city of Aswan and is also usually visited during cruises on the Nile.
The largest river of the country, the Nile, is dammed with the help of the Aswan Dam to Lake Nasser. With a total area of about 6,000 square kilometers, this reservoir is the third largest in the world.
The Aswan Dam was built between 1960 and 1971, but already at the end of the 19th century an English engineer built a dam to prevent flooding. This was finally supplemented during construction in the 1970s with a new wall about seven kilometers away.
More than 30,000 workers were involved in the construction of the Aswan Dam; by the way, most of them came from the then Soviet Union. Unfortunately, about 400 construction workers also lost their lives during the dangerous work. However, the construction did not only bring advantages; centuries-old architectural monuments were endangered by it. In the end, 24 structures had to be painstakingly moved in order to realize the construction, including the famous Abu Simbel. But not only buildings were moved, also more than 100,000 people had to be resettled. In total, the construction cost about 2.2 billion euros.
By the way, the construction of the Aswan Dam had several reasons. On the one hand, agriculture was to be stimulated by better irrigation, on the other hand, the navigability of the Nile was to be improved and thus bring about an economic upswing. Electricity was also to be generated with the help of the Aswan Dam.
