In this video, we explore the biblical and theological connection between the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) in the Hebrew Scriptures and the crucifixion of Jesus. We reflect on the symbolic significance of the Southern Steps in Jerusalem and how ancient Israel's ritual of transferring the nation's sins onto a scapegoat served as a powerful, yet temporary, form of atonement.
The Day of Atonement covered sin through ongoing animal sacrifices, whereas Jesus, called the "Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world," offered a once-for-all, final payment for sin. In this light, we consider a provocative metaphor: the Old Testament system functioned similarly to a "credit card," covering sin without fully paying the debt. Jesus' declaration from the cross, tetelestai ("It is finished"), signals that the debt was finally paid in full.
Essential Caveats to This Analogy:
This metaphor is intended as a teaching tool, not a whole theology of atonement. Please consider the following theological clarifications:
1. God's Justice Was Never Delayed or Lax:
The analogy may sound like God was "kicking the can down the road." But biblically, God accepted Old Covenant sacrifices as genuinely effective for their time and purpose—even if they pointed toward something greater.
2. Sacrifices Addressed Sin Regularly, Not Cumulatively: There were also daily, weekly, monthly, and annual sacrifices built into the covenant system (see Leviticus and Numbers). This means sin was being dealt with continuously, as it happened. If someone sinned, they didn't "wait until Yom Kippur" to deal with it. They brought an offering immediately (like a guilt offering, sin offering, etc.). Yom Kippur was a yearly event, not an accumulating ledger waiting for a final payment.
The cross doesn't nullify the Old Testament—it fulfills it. Jesus' atoning work is best understood in the light of what came before, not in contrast to it.
