Hana Ward is a Los Angeles-based artist whose ceramics and paintings exhibited in "World Without End: The George Washington Carver Project" come from her series How to Build Up Worn Out Soils, a reference to Carver’s 1905 scientific experiment station bulletin of the same name. Paying homage to Carver’s influence on sustainable farming, as well as to his spiritual ideas, Ward’s canvases, which include a portrait of Carver, and stoneware lamps “planted” in dirt illuminate both the earthly and mystical dimensions of Carver’s scientific work. “You Remember that you ARE Spirit. You are connected to Source Energy,” writes Ward in reference to these works.
"World Without End: The George Washington Carver Project" is co-curated by Cameron Shaw, Executive Director, and Yael Lipschutz, independent curator. This exhibition is made possible with support from Getty through its PST ART: Art & Science Collide initiative.
