I've returned to my beloved Maria Grinberg this week. It's a shame she's been so overshadowed by the other titans which came out of the Soviet Union, certainly posthumously. Her recording of Schumann's Symphonic Studies is - in my mind - nothing short of astonishing, and shows the Russian school of piano playing at its finest. Or the Soviet rather, for there is a difference. A deep, rich sound, a neo-romantic approach, impeccably correct and sound musicianship, and with a strong technical foundation to back it up. Bravo, Maria.
