Today’s adventure takes us across three Florida creeks armed with both a dip net and a cast net to see what bizarre and exotic fish are hiding beneath the mud.
The first creek started off slow — a few tilapia, failed scoops, and then something shocking… millions of invasive cane toad tadpoles swarming the water. From there, we pulled up more tilapia, including one tiny enough to become the perfect snack for my most terrifying predator back home: the Payara (Vampire Fish).
At the second creek, things got crazy. We netted bright jewel cichlids, then switched to the cast net where I caught the largest Pike Killifish I’ve ever seen, along with more invasive tilapia. But the wildest surprise? Two bizarre catches with vibrant colors I never expected to see in a Florida creek.
Finally, at the last location, I sifted through the mud and found exactly what I was searching for: dojo loaches, wriggling and twisting out of the silt.
Back home, I faced a new challenge — figuring out where all these fish should go. The dojo loaches went into a breeder box for quarantine, the monster Pike Killifish joined the Fly River Turtle tank, and the tiny tilapia went straight into the jaws of my Payara.
