Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (IATA: ZNZ, ICAO: HTZA) is the principal airport serving the Zanzibar Archipelago, located on Unguja Island, approximately 5 kilometers south of Zanzibar City, the capital of Zanzibar. Established during the British protectorate era, the airport was initially known as Kisauni Airport and later as Zanzibar International Airport. In 2010, it was renamed in honor of Abeid Amani Karume, the first president of Zanzibar.

The airport comprises three terminals:
• Terminal 1: Currently inactive and utilized as airport offices.
• Terminal 2: Active for all landing aircraft, handling both domestic and some international flights.
• Terminal 3: Construction began in January 2011 by the Chinese Beijing Construction Engineering Group, with an estimated cost of US$70.4 million. Despite initial delays, the terminal was inaugurated in September 2020 and commenced operations in early 2021. It serves international flights and has the capacity to accommodate up to 1.5 million passengers annually.

In terms of infrastructure, the airport features a single asphalt runway (18/36) measuring 3,007 meters in length.

Regarding passenger traffic, the airport has experienced significant growth over the years. In 2014, it handled approximately 934,337 passengers. By 2018, this number increased to 1,406,300 passengers, marking a 14.33% rise from the previous year.

The airport is served by 38 different airlines, offering flights to destinations across East Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Its strategic location and modern facilities have established it as a vital hub for both domestic and international travel in the region.
