Sanding the Rocker Panel (RAW Episode) - Mazda MX5 Miata - Underdog Garage

There was so much good footage that we decided to make a very unedited version and provide more commentary throughout the process. Let us know what you think. Our 2003 NB Mazda Miata had some really bad rust, especially on the rocker panel and quarter panel. We cut out the old rocker panel and quarter panel, and we installed new metal panels for both. With the new quarter panel in, now it was time for Bob to work some auto body magic. With multiple body filler applications and numerous rounds of sanding, he's working to get our MX5's quarter panel looking like new again.

First thing on this panel sanding was to mask in the door jam any areas we didn't want to sand. We used masking tape to outline this. Next step was to scuff the body panel to give it texture so the body filler would easily grip to the metal panel. Once that was set, we started mixing our body filler and laying it down on the Miata's quarter panel. This first round of filler was built up high and cut back with the sander pretty aggressively. We were mostly trying to cover the weld joint and get a flat panel.

The next round of body filler was for starting to shape the panel contour, followed by more sanding and refinement. Unfortunately we tried to set this filler up in too cold of a temperature and it did not set right. We had to scrape it off the MX5 and basically start from scratch again.

The third and final round of body filler was the final contour shaping of the quarter panel. It was a very light coat application for the last finishing touches. Then we put down glaze putty on the quarter panel to fill any pin holes and imperfections in the body filler. Now this Miata's quarter panel is ready for paint prep and primer!
