0:04 Those who live by disruption die by disruption.
0:08 If you're involved in that, that's the Fate you're gonna meet.
0:12 It's like being a soldier with the sword, you gotta expect that battlefield.
0:15 And design fictions, are a part of that;
0:18 they're a part of the startup disruption world.
0:21 They do not stabilize the situation, they destabilize it.
0:25 You will never see a design fiction which is about getting married, buying a house, having kids, and living in a stable environment, with Civil Rights.
0:37 You're never gonna hear a design fiction on that topic.
0:40 Why don't design fiction people do that?
0:42 Why don't you find that interesting?
0:44 Why don't we do stuff like that?
0:45 Why is design fiction always full of wow, and amazingness?
0:52 Kind of a good question.
0:55 Well, I'm gonna tell you why, and it's gonna kind of hurt.
1:01 In the startup world, you work hard and you move fast, in order to make other people rich.
1:08 Other people, not you;
1:11 you're a small elite of very smart young people who are working very hard, for an even smaller elite, of mostly baby boomer financiers.
1:23 So they can buy national governments, shut the governments down, destroy the middle class and the Nation State.
1:31 That's been going on a long time.
1:35 It's not something you invented, that's a historical development.
1:38 There's a lot of reasons that the Nation State's gotta go, there's a lot of reasons why a middle class is in the way.
1:45 But that's what you do.
1:46 And that'll be the judgement of history for your startup culture.
1:50 They're gonna say: "the TwentyTeens were all about that."
1:53 It was a tacit allegiance between the hacker space favelas of the startups, and offshore capital and tax avoidance money laundries.
2:04 And what were they doing?
2:06 They were building a globalized network society.
2:10 And that's what's coming next, an actual globalized network society,
2:14 now you're routing around it from the bottom, while they climb over it from the top.
2:19 But you're both aimed in the same direction.
2:21 That's why you're in tacit allegiance, whether you know it or not.
2:24 And right now everybody lives the way that people used to live under Empires and Colonial States.
2:32 We're all autoColonialized by The Austerity.
2:40 That's your big dragon.
2:43 That's your actual dragon.
2:46 Not like the little tactical dragon, that's the big dragon.
2:49 And you know it's the big dragon, 'cause you're part of it.
2:52 You're actually its brain and its nervous system.
2:56 You.
2:59 And as long as you are making rich guys richer, you are not disrupting the Austerity.
3:08 You are one of its top facilitators.
3:13 What's the answer to this problem?
3:15 Pretty simple:
3:16 Keep more of the money yourself.
3:20 Keep more of the money yourself,
3:22 but that's not enough, 'cause I've seen that done.
3:25 And when Tech people keep more of the money themselves,
3:28 they just go and build toy rocketships, they never actually build a global network society.
3:33 They don't actually go in and create a Civil Network.
3:38 That's not on their agenda, they're too hung up on being cool about it.
3:42 Now, it's kinda great that you're in allegience with the austerity
3:46 because they're super powerful and in your own way, so are you.
3:49 But are they your friends?
3:50 Are they really allies you can trust?
3:52 No they're not.
3:53 How do you know that?
3:54 They kicked your ass in the 1990s.
3:58 They destroyed you in the Dot Com Boom.
4:01 They wrecked your dreams.
4:02 They took everything you built.
4:04 You have never avenged yourself for that.
4:08 They're still sitting on your neck.
4:11 And it was their fault, not yours.
4:15 They're the ones who panicked and destroyed the back of it.
4:18 It wasn't your technology that caused the dot com crash.
4:21 It was them.
4:22 Then in 2008 they did the same thing again.
4:25 Now they're doing it again.
4:28 And if you ever tackled that particular dragon
4:30 No you haven't.
4:31 So that's a large one.
4:33 And I kind of warned you that it would be painful.
4:36 But that's what I hear, here.
4:38 And in fact, that's what I hear in startup culture all over the world.
4:41 And you share the values of your brothers and sisters in other similar cities.
4:45 You have a lot in common with them.
4:47 More than you understand.
4:50 The best thing you have in common with them is your shared illusions.
5:09 So I'm not gonna kill that dragon for you.
5:12 That's really your problem.
