At number 2: ‘Balada para un loco’, recorded in 1969. Music written by Astor Piazzolla, lyrics by Horacio Ferrer, and sung by Roberto Goyeneche. We usually don’t associate Piazzolla with sung tangos – most of his works are instrumentals. But this is one of the exceptions. In the 1960s Piazzolla collaborated with acclaimed writers like Horacio Ferrer, and Jorge Luis Borges. Together they kind of re-invented the tango canción. ‘Balada para un loco’ is an impressive example.

So, we’re almost at number 1. And there are quite a few of my favourite Piazzolla recordings that I can’t fit in anymore – like 'Celos', 'Escualo', 'Milonga del Ángel', and 'Jacinto Chiclana' for instance. At number 1: ‘Oblivion’, recorded in 1982. Again, music written by Piazzolla.
This may very well be his most famous composition; and it’s one of the very few of Piazzolla’s tangos that people actually dance to sometimes. Not in the traditional milongas of course. Oblivion is a timeless masterpiece, perhaps a bit melodramatic, a mix of tango and film music. But that’s true for much of his catalogue.
