At 5 AM in 2014, in front of the South Korean Embassy in Beijing,
a North Korean family of nine had only seven meters left to reach safety—
when a Chinese officer suddenly seized the mother’s ankle.
At that moment, her 17-year-old daughter screamed and pulled with all her strength:
“Mom, don’t let go! I’ll pull you!”
For ten terrifying seconds, the officer’s hand and the daughter’s hand pulled in opposite directions.
Those ten seconds decided the fate of all nine family members.
