Every year, I head deep into the mountains of Nuevo León, Mexico for the Ruta Épica — my favorite overland adventure of the year. This time, I’m joined by my dad, Jonathan in his 2WD 4Runner, and Jake in his '90s Chevy Suburban as we explore some of the most remote trails in the Sierra Madre Oriental. From hidden waterfalls and narrow switchbacks to wild campsites at 9,000 feet, this trip had it all — even a few sketchy moments with fuel and terrain. We tackle tough trails like El Butano and camp in one of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever stayed: La Cebolla. This is what real overlanding looks like — raw, scenic, and unforgettable.
