Quintero Golf Club - The Story of Arizona's BEST Public Course! # 93 on Golf Digest Top 100 Public

In the heart of the Arizona desert lies one of the most breathtaking courses in America — Quintero Golf Club, a Rees Jones design carved through the rugged Hieroglyphic Mountains near Lake Pleasant. Ranked among Golf Digest’s Top 100 Public Courses, Quintero is known for its dramatic elevation changes, lightning-fast greens, and views that stretch forever. But before any fairways were shaped or bunkers carved, legend says one man envisioned it all — a mysterious figure known only as Old Ben.

In this episode of our Told & Untold series, we uncover the lost story of Old Ben — a World War I veteran who once worked at Castle Hot Springs, long before Quintero existed. Family letters claim he hiked into the desert each night with a hickory club and a handful of golf balls, sketching his dream course into a leather notebook he called Desert Hope. Decades later, Rees Jones himself is said to have stumbled across that very notebook — and used its sketches as inspiration for one of Quintero’s most famous holes. Whether coincidence or destiny, the resemblance is haunting.

Then the story shifts to our round — part of our ongoing “Knocked Off” series, where we’re playing every course on the Top 100 Public list. We made the trip out to Quintero with my wife and sister-in-law, playing a fierce game of Dots across the desert ridges. Between the laughs, the jaw-dropping tee shots, and the occasional three-putt, we discovered just how challenging and unforgettable this course really is. Quintero isn’t just a round — it’s an adventure through time, design, and landscape.
