Many interactive programs need to respond to events, for example user actions, by setting up callback functions to serve as event handlers. The language or GUI framework typically dedicates a thread to running these event handlers. Asynchronous programming provides an efficient way to carry out many event-driven tasks on a single thread. At this scale, though, the number and complexity of callback functions makes the control flow hard to understand. Language and library support in the form of promises and async functions can support cleaner, more understandable, and more composable code.
