Digging Precious Opal at the Spencer Opal Mine, Plus a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

Kate joins dozens of social media creators at the Spencer Opal Mine to dig for American precious opal. Kate has visited Spencer Opal's mini mine, their overburden pile right next to their shop, and found beautiful opal there - but this is the first time she has been lucky enough to visit the opal mine itself. During the dig, Kate tries her hand at several possible methods for finding the gorgeous gems, but settles on her tried and true "walk and look" method.

The mine crew was fantastically helpful. Wearing their trademark hot pink shirts and cowboy hats, crew members could easily be identified for asking questions, and they roamed around checking in with the guests to make sure everybody had what they needed. They even brought ice-cold water, and served lunch in the middle of the day.

Located in beautiful east--central Idaho, right near the Montana border, Spencer Opal Mine is now open to the public for day-long opal hunts. Current cost (2025) for the mine experience is $345, while the mini-mine costs $75. Either choice is likely to let you bring home some beautiful precious opals and a some fantastic memories.
