Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons was a hugely popular kids TV show in the 1960's. It was set in the slightly distant future and featured sci-fi technology – on a budget. That's because Captain Scarlet was a puppet show, by Gery and Sylvia Anderson.
Because it used puppets for characters, all props had to be hand made and at “puppet scale”. But occasionally, a “real world” item could be found on the set of the TV show, most often radios and tape recorders!
This charming little 3-inch rim-drive reel to reel tape recorder was one such “real world” item that was featured in the show. At the time, it was inexpensive to buy, so it did not strain the prop budget and, with a little modification, it looked like serious studio machine – to the puppets.
Though this rim drive tape recorder never actually played or recorded on thee show as a prop, the “real world” version was expected to be a usable machine. And, compared to other's of it's type – rim drive units, this machine was a good buy.
The machine arrived DOA from E-Bay, and with some TLC and capacitors, ClydeSight has preserved it – not as a TV show prop, but as a real working tape recorder. It has some unique characteristics for a budget tape recorder, as you will see.
Enjoy the video exploration of this vintage reel tor reel recorder and join the many Captain Scarlet fans who re-live their love of the show by understanding how this machine was used as a prop.
