Bodegas Lopez de Heredia was founded in 1877 by Don Raphael Lopez de Heredia 1877. The Vina Tondonia vineyard was purchased in 1913, is over 100 hectares and is situated on the right bank of the Ebro River at the edge of Rioja Alta.
The estate covers an area of 53,076 square metres and includes underground cellars 200 metres long and descending 15 metres deep, which can start 13,000 oak barrels. The bodega has 72 oak vats of various sizes to ferment wine.
The wine is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20%Garnacho and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo. The wine is aged in barrels for 6 years in barrel and another 4 years in bottle before release. About 220,000 bottles are produced each year.
Vina Tondonia has a mesh around the bottle. The mesh was introduced at the end of the 19th century by the Marqués de Riscal, to protect increasingly successful wines from tampering. But it was soon seen as an indicator of quality (which it is not).
