2002 Chevy S10 4.3 - Bad misfire, stalling, VERY rich fuel trims - Not a spider??? P0172 P0175 P0304

This is the truck that had a distributor installed but not correctly indexed. Rather than going through the usual hassle of finding #1 TDC and moving the distributor over I decided to try using my Picoscope with an in-cylinder pressure trace and a secondary pickup trace. That way I could see exactly where the timing was and exactly how far to move the distributor over. The method actually worked very well! See video here:

In this video I address the cause of the misfire and poor running. It's hard to keep the truck running as it is running VERY rich on both banks. These engines being what they are I definitely thought I was installing a fuel injection spider... However, before I go putting that expensive part in I wanted to go through the proper diagnosis and it's a good thing I did! There's nothing wrong with thinking about past experiences and common failure items but don't let it stop you from following evidence based diagnosis. Just because something's a very common problem does not mean it's the problem on the vehicle in front of you!
