EXPERT Engineer Shares Latest Dawlish Cliffs Sea Wall Update 8k, Could This Be Our Last Tour? Part 1

The video, presented by Jack Brookes from BAM, covers progress at Phase Four of the Southwest Rail Resilience Program. The team has completed over 5,000 nails and drilled over 54 km into the cliff, and it is nearing completion. The final nail is expected to be installed during filming.

The project involves demobbing operations, netting, and reinstating areas affected by the construction. The works are part of a government-funded program to enhance rail line protection against cliff and sea damage between Dawlish and Teignmouth.

Challenges include implementing water diversion systems and maintaining access paths throughout construction. Different construction methods, such as Reno mattresses and drapery mesh systems, are used to stabilise the cliff and prevent debris from reaching the railway.

The project required collaboration with multiple landowners, and accommodations such as fencing and water troughs were made for grazing sheep. Special measures, including the use of drilling rigs, mesh installation, and rubble shoots, were employed to reinforce the cliff face.

The final phase includes clearing equipment, conducting inspections, and completing suitability tests for anchor stability. The project aims to finish with meshing and demobilization, ensuring the area is tidied and handed back responsibly to landowners.
