Text from the Gospel and Homily ~ June 15, 2025
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
a reading from the holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, o Lord.
Jesus said to his disciples: "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the father has is mine; for this reason, I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you."
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
On this the solemnity of the most holy trinity let's dig in a little bit on the gospel of John. With these Heart of the Nation Masses being quicker than most it can be a little hard to give that gospel the time it needs. It is in my opinion the most challenging of the four to really understand. But listen again to what Christ said today. We're in John chapter 16. The spirit of truth will guide you to all truth. He doesn't speak on his own. He will take from what is mine everything that the father has is mine. So do you hear the interplay between the three persons of the trinity at work here. Jesus is saying that he is one with the father, and what they have together is given in turn to the holy spirit. And, of course, we can just as easily call the holy spirit the spirit of truth being consistent with this particular part of the gospel of John there is no contradiction there by a long shot. The holy spirit is the spirit of truth. But we are disciples of Christ and therefore we believe in a trinitarian God. One God, 3 persons. And we believe that even though the word trinity is not in the bible the foundation of that believe is most certainly in the bible. This passage the gospel of John chapter 16 and others reveal the truth of the matter. God the father, Jesus Christ the son, the holy spirit. They are a package deal. Where Jesus is, so the father and the holy spirit are as well. In spite of their distinct persons, they remain one in their united divinity. And Saint John the Evangelist when he wrote this gospel did understand that. And he communicates that wisdom to us today.
