Metal Gear Language: Why Your Favourite Video Game Might Be Your Best Language Teacher| Iryna Panina

“There should be a strict system in language learning”, my English tutor used to say. For a while, I believed it. I studied grammar rules, drilled vocabulary, and followed every step like clockwork. But during a live interview for an American radio station, all that structure faded into the background. I was talking about my region’s liberation when a keyword – “defence” – surfaced from nowhere. Or rather, from somewhere unexpected: “Metal Gear Rising”, a military video game I have been playing since I was thirteen. That moment made me wonder: maybe games are not distractions, but secret allies in mastering a new language.
