Unused IO pins of a microcontroller can cause a lot of cross-talk, when using the microcontroller for sensitive measurements. For example when using the Arduino CapacitiveTouch library when creating capacitive touch buttons in your design.
Especially when using any of the available Arduino boards which have al the IO pins of the onboard microcontroller routed to the IO connectors on the circuit board. When left unconfigured in a high impedance state these traces can act as antennas contributing in cross-talk between IO pins.
