I wrote and recorded this piece in one shot of about ~4 hours. It's kind of an exercise in extremely traditional form (exposition repeat, very short development, direct-repeat recap, brief coda) while still hopefully carrying something expressive and unique. It's in a slightly more archaic 'classical-romantic' style, but I think there are qualities to it that betray this.
I was playing a bunch of Haydn at the time and kind of liked how direct a lot of the music was, but I got annoyed that I'm not very good at playing Alberti bass. So this piece starts with Alberti bass, and I also can't play this piece. (Maybe someday I will try actually practising it, but not today)
The preludes take me a very long time to write. Sometimes I have a draft that stays in one form for many months. I think of the prelude cycle as a really important / defining body of work for me; I think I needed to write something (even if not in my 'usual' style) where I don't think so hard about anything and essentially through-compose, and I think it's fascinating that even without meticulous attention to detail, and with lots of 'boring' repetition, I still end up with something that I feel has a clear character of myself inside it.
