This is the solo passage from Ijmuiden to Helgoland, a red sandstone outcrop standing defiant in the grey waters of the North Sea 70km from the German main land. A place once fortified, bombed, abandoned, and reborn, it now serves as both a geographical curiosity, Duty Free anomaly and a natural paradise.
The passage wasn’t always smooth. The calms, deceptive in their peace, stretched hours into small eternities, demanding patience and watchfulness. The blows came sudden and fierce—wind howling from the west, hurling sea and spray through the night.
