Didja miss me? :)
It would be nice to have a sequel to that other video I made about PTX dodging high notes so here's this! Although following a tight a capella arrangement can limit them in terms of improvising, that has never really stopped them. So here's PTX stepping out of their comfort zone to give us some cute high(er) notes!
CRITERA:
What do I consider a "high note"? I prioritized climactic moments on their songs - so for example, they sing Carol of the Bells half-a-step higher on tour, yet since it doesn't have any climactic moments for high notes, I didn't include it here. Same thing with Scott's various changes on his Hallelujah solo.
What do I consider "higher"? I look at it pitch wise: basically, if the note being sung is higher than the one in studio, it counts. So if the entire song is upped half a step or a step, it belongs here, despite not consciously singing a high note "higher" (see: Can't Sleep Love).
Because it's really hard to determine the base "high note" of a song exclusively sung live, I've only chosen studio songs that have been performed at least once. I might do one for non-studio songs if I find enough clips to include, who knows.
Since this is a look to high notes, I've prioritized pitch over registers. So if, let's say, someone sings an F5 in mix on studio but an F#5 in falsetto live, the F#5 goes there. But I've also added cases where they sing a note originally in falsetto in chest/mix, since I do believe it deserves the merit to appear in this video.
"Wait, how do I know who you're referring to in the video?": I use the color codes that I use in every other PTX video I've made. So: Scott is blue, Mitch is green, Kirstie is pink, Kevin is yellow, and Avi is black.
I decided to look for the equivalent of a high note in studio: if the high note is sung in a random place where I can't really link it back to the song, I decide against it. So, I couldn't include their freestyle in Joyful, Joyful. Scott is the biggest offender of this (and Love You Long Time is the biggest stretch of this category).
I thought it was fair to make the note comparisons only with the same singer. That's why I couldn't include Matt singing in falsetto during his Hallelujah solo, due to the original version being sung by Avi, and why sadly he didn't make it to the video. Mitch's part in Angels We Have Heard is the biggest stretch of this rule, since he actually took Kirstie's part of the song - but he's also technically singing along with her on studio, so it counts.
"What about this or this note?": It either didn't fit my criteria, or I forgot it. Sorry, I'm only human, and contrary to popular belief I haven't watched every PTX performance in existence. Point it or link it in the comments so other people can see it! :)
