WGCU Public Media has produced a 30-minute episode of their weekly television public and current affairs program to discuss the impact of climate and water quality in Southwest Florida. Our first story focuses on the impact of rising temperatures, related heat illnesses and how to prevent them. We then talk with a paleoclimate scientist to discuss the history of hurricanes and whether the forecast of major storms has any relation to climate change. A third story discusses the ineffectual use of local fertilizer bans and whether using reclaimed water helps to prevent the looming water shortage in Florida. The fourth story continues about water quality, but whether pestides used to kill mosquitoes is found offshore in the water, as well as in the local wildlife. The final story ends on a positive, highlighting a Sarasota county program that encourages residents to use better solutions to prevent water runoff on their property.
