This abandoned building is out in the middle of nowhere, near the marshes of the Napa Slough. In 1946, Press Wireless, Inc. constructed a radio station which received and processed most news reports from East Asia. The station was the first in the Western United States to receive signals from Sputnik 1.
This base made first contact around 6 o-clock on Friday October 4th 1957. The signal was being picked up at intervals of every hour and 35 min after first contact. Stronger and stronger signals would indicate that the satellite was getting closer over head as it orbits the earth.
The launch of Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union is widely considered the event that initiated the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. The successful launch of the first artificial satellite into orbit shocked the United States and triggered a period of intense competition and anxiety,
leading to significant advancements in space technology and a national focus on scientific and technological superiority.
