Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, also known as "Il Fontanone" (The Big Fountain), is a monumental Baroque fountain located in Rome on Janiculum Hill. It was commissioned by Pope Paul V in 1612 to mark the completion of the Aqua Paola aqueduct, which restored an ancient Roman water supply system.
The fountain is celebrated for its grand and theatrical design, attributed to architects Giovanni Fontana and Flaminio Ponzio. It features five large arches framed by columns of pink and white marble. Water flows into a wide, shallow basin, creating a dramatic visual and auditory effect.
Above the arches, an inscription honors Pope Paul V, and the structure is adorned with symbols of the Borghese family, including eagles and dragons. The fountain offers stunning views of Rome and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Its iconic appearance has made it a favorite filming location and an enduring symbol of Roman splendor.
