Alaska Overlanding - McCarthy, Kennecott, and Medical Emergencies

We were 200+ miles from the nearest hospital when a medical emergency struck on Alaska's remote McCarthy Road. What started as an epic overlanding journey to the historic Kennecott Mines turned into a critical decision about whether to continue or turn back. This is what happened when things went wrong in one of the most isolated areas we've ever traveled.

The McCarthy Road is a 60-mile mostly gravel route through Wrangell-St. Elias National Park leading to the abandoned Kennecott copper mining town. It's remote, rugged, and unforgiving - exactly the kind of overlanding challenge we look for. But when chest pains hit our travel companion, we had to weigh the risks of continuing versus getting medical help.
