Nicholas Lawrence, a passionate and record-breaking free diver, decodes to embark on breaking another national record in the Free Immersion category in the Vertical Blue event, where he would dive without wearing fins. He aimed to get to 315 ft (96 m), but at 223 ft (68 m), he started having trouble, which threatened not only his record-breaking attempt but his life.

Freediving, also known as breath-hold diving or skin diving, is an underwater diving technique that relies on holding one's breath instead of using breathing apparatus like scuba gear. It involves descending into the water and resurfacing without assistance from external air sources. Free divers, who are considered extreme athletes, can descend more than 328 ft (100 m), equivalent to the height of a 30-story building, without relying on an oxygen tank. At such depths, the diver's heart rate starts to decrease, their blood vessels constrict, and their lungs compress to the size of oranges due to the immense water pressure they experience.
