Synthetic web slings have some special challenges when used with shackles. It's important to not allow them to bind (too much material in too small a space), but also to not let them point load (too little material in too big a space, sling shifts to one side instead of being properly centered and balanced). But guess what?!
Yep, you guessed it — shackle manufacturers are on top of these concerns. There are several varieties of shackle designed just for certain kinds of synthetic slings. CM is one such manufacturer.
CM provides a model of web sling shackle that is cost-effective and versatile, in both carbon and alloy varieties. Today, we're demonstrating how to use the carbon version, which does not include a retention nut (lynch pin only).
1) Pull the lynch pin out of the load pin.
2) Slide the load pin out (it doesn't have to be all the way — just enough to fit your sling into the shackle).
3) Insert sling eye & slide load pin through, making sure to get it all the way through the shackle.
4) Reinstall lynch pin, making sure to leave it in the "closed" position (twist the loop so that it's around the load pin; this helps prevent it from snagging and ripping out during load).
Make sure to not point load the shackle! The sling should be centered on the load pin and fill a decent amount of the available space between the shackle ears. If you have a twisted eye sling, for example, you might want to include spacers so it doesn't shift and become unbalanced.
