The Penang ferry service, established in 1894 by Quah Beng Kee and his brothers, is the oldest in Malaysia. Initially operating as a passenger-only service between George Town and Butterworth, it later expanded to include vehicle transport. The service, once the sole connection between the island and mainland, has seen various operators and changes, including the introduction of speedboats and, more recently, catamarans.
