Nanotechnology for single-molecule biology: from chromosome motors to protein sequencing to building a synthetic cell
Speaker: Cees Dekker, Delft University of Technology, Delft, Netherlands
Chair: David Rueda, MRC LMS and Imperial College, London, UK
Co-Chair: Maria Flocco, formerly AstraZeneca, UK
In the keynote lecture, Cees Dekker describes how nanotechnology has developed a toolbox of instruments for studying biology at the single molecule level. He illustrates this using three examples: imaging motor proteins that shape our chromosomes; measuring single proteins with nanopores; and efforts to build a cell from the bottom up.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Our scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
