This is my.... just dug up improvised "Hendrix-like" version of Canada's national anthem that I recorded on a cassette player in my bedroom back in 1983 when I was in high school in Sarnia! I had seen Spimmy H's Woodstock Star Spangled Banner anthem performance in an old vid, so I went and did my own Canadian anthem version in Sarnia (Ontario) with a BIG MUFF PI fuzz box connected to my cheapo electric guitar in my bedroom. Though, it was because I running for student's counsel president (I lost) and I played this song over the morning school PA and it left the school in silence! hehe Very glad I could convert it to digital after all these years and put a ukulele opening to Canada's National Anthem since it will by the 150 Anniversary of Canada in 2017. hehe
Real story:
========
I forgot to mention the reason why I did this song! I was running for the president of the student council of my high school (Northern Collegiate, Sarnia in 1983 only as a joke egged on by a disgruntled friend). My friend wanted to shake up things so we came up with this crazy scheme that I would run as a "dictator" named "P.D. Forrest" and that is what we did. I can barely believe I did that now when I'm 51 years old and I was 18 back then. I lost in the end to Doug Coulther (a guy I knew since Grade 1!). Long story in that story. A high school artist friend of mine "Hank" at the time was big into Hendrix and he loved that version of the Star Spangled Banner and he thought I should do one for Canada. So, I did it one a whim with my fuzz box. All of the candidates were allowed a 2 minute message across the entire school from their PA during home room. Since they always played the National Anthem first, I gave them my new Hendrix version of O Canada and in the middle part I said, "Vote for P. D. Forrest"... now is the time for a leader." lol I remember putting the tape recorder to the microphone in the principal's office as I let that song blast and the vice principal Herr Schultz smiled at me at the end. Great moment. And the school was totally silent after that! Amazing. Though, I came in 2nd place in the election. However, at least I still have my cheesy song version of O Canada. 8-) Paul Wells, Canada's renown journalist even voted for me in this high school election! lol
