Chrono Pursuit's Three Things Under Three Minutes: Batavi Atelier "Rock"

Apart from my full ~30 minute reviews of watches, I wanted to provide a quick overview of each watch I review so that viewers (you) can get my best takeaways about each watch in a quick and easy manner. And thus, "Three Things Under Three Minutes" was born. Today's first episode of this new series starts with a review of Batavi's latest release, the Atelier "Rock" edition.

The Batavi Atelier surprising me in so many ways. The eggplant purple dial's texture is other-wordly, even compared to specialized dial-makers such as Seiko or Straum, and the architecture of the watch's case is extremely unique. And the etched numerals underneath the sapphire crystal appear to "float" over the dials deeply dimpled landscape, adding a very cool visual effect. For about $450, it is hard to argue that this microbrand is putting out seriously good watches at a seriously decent price.

That doesn't mean this watch is without its faults. The movement is a rather cheap Miyota 9039 which, while perfectly suitable at this price range, feels a little less premium than if the watch included a Sellita or a La Joux Perret movement. The etched numerals underneath the sapphire crystal could be better sanded/etched as some numerals have some "rough" edges that are clearly visible to the naked up.

I am very bullish on Batavi's future developments as both their first released line and this second Atelier line have been fantastically unique and well-constructed. Nobody else in the watch industry, at least to my knowledge, is designing watches that look as good as Batavi, and Batavi certain has a lead on their competitors when it comes to dials. We'll have to see what Batavi's 3rd iteration will be, but I am very excited for the future from this Amsterdam-based microbrand.
