Kate Crawford & Hari Kunzru on AI and the myth of creativity

Each new technology challenges and shifts our notion of art and artists. Generative AI tools, however, have ushered in a full-blown epistemic crisis. Who, really, is the author of an AI-generated text or image? How do we distinguish an expression from an idea or style? And what do we mean when we talk about creativity—the supposed hallmark of humanity? These questions are at the forefront of debates among American copyright lawyers and experts, even as AI threatens to destabilize the field. But they also impact the work of contemporary artists and writers, who must grapple not only with how their work is absorbed and aped by these systems (and how their fields are impacted), but with broader changes in the understanding of creation.

For the 2024 Triple Canopy Symposium, the scholar Kate Crawford and novelist Hari Kunzru drew on extensive conversations with lawyers, artists, engineers, and writers to address the cultural, legal, and philosophical questions that undergird the common anxieties about generative AI. Their conversation was moderated by deputy editor Rachel Ossip.
