Christianity began as one unified movement, but different regions developed different interpretations of Jesus’ teachings. Over time, debates, church councils, and political conflicts caused major divisions that shaped today’s Christian world.
1. Early Christianity – Different Cities, Different Beliefs
Centers like Alexandria, Antioch, Rome, and Constantinople interpreted Jesus’ message through their own cultures. This led to early debates about one key question: “Who is Jesus?”
2. The Council of Nicaea (325) – The Arian Crisis
Arius argued that Jesus was created by God and not equal to Him. The council rejected this idea and strengthened the church’s authority to define “correct belief.”
3. The First Major Split – Council of Chalcedon (451)
Disagreements about Jesus’ divine and human nature caused the Coptic, Armenian, and Syriac Churches to break away — Christianity’s first official division.
4. The Great Schism (1054) – Catholics vs. Orthodox
Differences in theology, worship style, and especially the Pope’s authority separated East and West. This created:
The Roman Catholic Church
The Eastern Orthodox Church
5. The Protestant Reformation (1517)
Martin Luther challenged indulgences, church corruption, and papal authority. He taught that salvation comes by faith alone. This sparked the first major Protestant movement: Lutheranism.
6. Calvinism and Other European Reforms
John Calvin emphasized predestination and influenced Reformed churches, Presbyterians, and the Huguenots.
7. England Breaks Away – Anglicanism
King Henry VIII separated England from Rome and created the Church of England, forming a middle way between Catholic and Protestant traditions.
8. Radical Reformers – Anabaptists
They rejected infant baptism and promoted adult baptism, pacifism, and communal living. Their descendants include Mennonites and Amish.
9. American-Born Movements
The 19th century produced new movements like:
Mormons
Jehovah’s Witnesses
Seventh-day Adventists
10. Pentecostalism – 20th Century Explosion
Pentecostalism emphasized spiritual gifts, emotional worship, and healing. Today it is one of the fastest-growing Christian groups worldwide.
Conclusion
Modern Christianity is divided into three major branches:
Catholics
Orthodox Christians
Protestants
Despite hundreds of denominations, they all trace their roots back to the same early movement — now transformed into a global, diverse mosaic of beliefs.
