Moore River to the north of Perth on the west coast of Australia is an ancient river having flowed through the landscape for millions of years. For most of the year the river channel is blocked from entering the ocean by a sandbar over the river mouth. This creates a unique environment and ecosystem for wildlife and people, a saline briny riverine lagoon.
Guilderton is a popular destination for fishing, swimming, and other water recreational activities. The river and its surroundings offer scenic landscapes, making it an attractive spot for both locals and tourists alike.
The river is approximately 194 kilometres long and flows through the Shire of Gingin before eventually reaching the Indian Ocean at Guilderton. At some point in the geological past the river was diverted from its previous course 30 kilometres to the north.
