“I’m the Night Clerk at a Family Motel — There Are Rules I Have to Follow”
Working as the night clerk at a small family motel sounded peaceful—slow nights, a few travelers, maybe the occasional late check-in.
But on my first shift, the owner handed me a laminated sheet of rules.
Not “policies.”
Not “guidelines.”
Rules.
And every one of them felt like a warning.
Rule 1: If a guest asks for Room 3, tell them it’s unavailable. It’s been unavailable for twelve years… but some people still try to book it.
Rule 2: After 11 PM, lock the lobby door. If anyone knocks after that, even if they say your name, pretend you can’t hear them.
Rule 3: Check the hallway cameras every hour. If you see a child running down the hall, call the owner. We haven’t had a child guest since last winter.
Rule 4: If you hear someone singing in the laundry room, turn the lights on before entering. The singing stops when the lights come on—if it doesn’t, leave immediately.
Rule 5: At 2:45 AM, the power may flicker. Stand still until it comes back. Movement attracts attention.
Rule 6: At dawn, you may hear footsteps behind you as you close your shift. Don’t turn around. Whoever stayed the night with you doesn’t like being seen.
This motel calls itself “family-friendly.”
But the things that stay here after dark… aren’t families.
