"At 0800hrs, the guns of the Royal Dart Yacht Club will be fired and this will be a signal for Vessels to Dress Ship and for the Bells of St. Saviour's Church to ring."
Since 1822 the bells of St. Saviour's Church, Dartmouth have been rung to welcome the new day for the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. This is a prestigious event not only for the regatta but the Ringing as well, as visitors from all over the world grace the towers with their presence over the three day annual event.
In 1856 Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and the Prince of Wales paid an unscheduled visit to Dartmouth owing to bad weather. Their arrival was timed to coincide the day before the regatta that year. Before leaving a few days later Queen Victoria bestowed the Royal title on the event.
To celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the event in 2019 the regatta's patron, Duke of York, paid a visit to the town and met with committee members and others who help to organise the event.
The piece of ringing is the final ring and lower on Saturday 31st August 2019.
